Why Catholic Schools? A Reflection by St. Joseph's Parent, Thomas Hogan
Being a part of the St. Joseph School community as a parent has led us to be much more involved with St. Joseph Parish. Our kids are always excited to see their classmates at mass on the weekends, and we have made many friends with the other parents as well. The kids also have many opportunities to sing at mass on weekends with their classmates and attend children's liturgy with their friends. Seeing the same people at mass, as well as at school, really allows for our kids to gain perspective on how they are part of a larger community. This same sense of community also extends to us, as parents.
A Catholic education is not just about attending mass once a week or having religion class during the school day. It's about receiving a truly faith-based education, where the values taught at home are reinforced at school. Faith-based education has given our children the opportunity to learn about our shared faith, and have those beliefs reinforced by both the teachers and staff at school.
There are numerous advantages to sending your children to St. Joseph as opposed to other schools in our area. For example, class sizes are smaller and the ratio of teachers to students is much more advantageous. Allowing our kids to receive a Catholic education (while learning about standard academic subjects) gives them a perspective that cannot be recreated in a standard, secular education.
I grew up learning about the value of a great Catholic education through my attendance at both a Catholic grade school and high school, and am proud to pass that tradition onto my own children.
